Charlotte Mayoral Candidate Lists "White" As One Of Her Qualifications
Source — A candidate for mayor in Charlotte, N.C., listed “white” among her qualifications in Facebook comments that have since been deleted.
The chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party rebuked Kimberley Paige Barnette, who has since apologized for her remarks.
“VOTE FOR ME!” Barnette, 53, wrote on her Facebook page, the Charlotte Observer reported.
“REPUBLICAN & SMART, WHITE, TRADITIONAL.”
You know what’s crazy? This would be a hell of a pitch like 70 years ago. Charlotte electorate would read it and be like, “Oh hell yeah, love smart white people.” Now, obviously there is nothing wrong with being white. There’s nothing wrong with being any color, shape, size, orientation, eye situation, whatever. What’s (Riggs voice) WILD is listing white as one of your qualifications. Listing it like it obviously makes you more appealing. A better candidate. Like it’s one of the key reasons folks should vote for you. “VOTE FOR ME because I’m: smart not dumb, Republican not Democratic, traditional not progressive, white not something else.” BOLD move to include white in that list.
She’s since apologized. She’s also taking heat for this quote.
During a debate last month, Barnette said she doesn’t think the city should “encourage more lower-income people to [come to] Charlotte,” according to the Observer.
“We should attract higher-income people,” she said.
This is actually spot on. Who the fuck wants to attract poors? Ever heard of chicks heading out to the club trying to get fucked by some poor dudes? Hell no. You gear up and you try to land the richest cock you can find. Why would a city be any different? Does anybody ever say, “Yo stay away from that rich neighborhood it’s dangerous”?
No, they don’t. Look, we’re a capitalist, democratic society. It’s an imperfect system so within that system we grab some from the rich to help elevate the poor. All in on that. The New York taxes I pay and don’t complain enough about clearly prove that. You can argue about the degree to which we should be doing this, and people have and forever will, but the principle is in place as it should and always will be.
But there’s nothing wrong with a city wanting to attract more rich people and less poor people. That’s a practice as old as time. Kimberley’s batting .500 but must say her miss was a BIG one.
